Sen. Eric Schmitt’s (R-MO) effort to place former special counsel Jack Smith in Atlanta amid the Fani Willis controversy hit a snag on Tuesday when Smith said the basketball game he remembered attending featured Caitlin Clark in Maryland, not a supposed NBA game in the Peach State.
The exchange during the Senate Judiciary Committee’s under-oath hearing revealed Schmitt had apparently confused the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks with the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.

The conclusions were wrong, though. Smith wasn’t in Atlanta. It was the wrong team, the wrong game, the wrong city. Schmitt made the GOP Senators look like idiots.
Now that the left has this narrative, all the good questioning in the hearing is going to be lost in the Fake News Media.
We can’t afford mistakes like this in something this important. In the time it took to make the exhibit, they could have checked the story before showing their entire butt during the hearing.
C’mon. That wasn’t how it went down.
Schmidt thought he had stumbled on a perjury trap and played it up to the crowd. He even said OUTRIGHT that it was a perjury trap.
And you don’t commission your staff to provide a 22”x29” posterboard for a simple, routine question.
“There was some ambiguity in the text messages about where he was. The senator asked if Smith could explain it, and he did.”
The senator did not think there was any ambiguity in the texts. He was sure that Smith was in Atlanta. He thought he had a gotcha moment. He didn’t ask for an explanation, he tried to trap Smith in what he thought was a trap.
There may be blame to go around, but responsibility rests with Smith and the Democrats on the committee.
They should have anticipated that Sen. Schmitt’s line of questioning would allude to the NBA game in Atlanta. They had a duty to conduct their due diligence and provide Sen. Schmitt with the exculpatory evidence showing that Smith had attended an Iowa Hawkeyes game, not an Atlanta Hawks game, and all of that should have been done prior to Sen. Schmitt’s questioning of Smith.
He was able to make Smith squirm and even got off a “dirtbag” insult at the end. That’s what people are going to remember. Schmidt came across as an ideal VP candidate.
But not surprising.
