After the lockdowns, what did the government teach me about government power?
COVID changed the way I hear the word “temporary.”
Before 2020, 'temporary' was temporary. Something happened, you dealt with it, and eventually you went back to living your life.
Then came COVID.
Most of us remember the rest. The empty streets. The closed businesses. The masks. The six-foot circles on the floor. Schools closed, churches restricted, nursing homes became nearly impossible to visit, and governments suddenly had an extraordinary amount to say about what ordinary Americans could and could not do.
I don’t need to make a list of everything that happened. You lived through it.
So did I.
What interests me now isn’t relitigating every lockdown decision or deciding which governor got which decision right. It is what the whole experience taught us about government power.
We learned that “temporary” can become a remarkably elastic word.
We also learned how quickly people will surrender ordinary freedoms when the circumstances are frightening enough.
I understood the fear. I had elderly people in my family, and I wanted to protect them. That’s why I eventually took the COVID shot.
I don’t regret doing it for them.
But I remember watching government move from telling us to be careful to telling us what we could do. At one point, OSHA tried to impose a vaccine-or-test requirement on businesses with 100 or more employees, covering roughly 84 million workers. The Supreme Court stopped it.
That was the moment the issue became especially clear to me.
This wasn’t simply about where I could go anymore. Government was reaching into the relationship between an employee and an employer.
That’s a lot of power.

Give the guy a break. He was a democrat. He is finally seeing the light. This time he will vote republican. Small steps but progress.
Combine another “Covid lockdown” with the Flock/Axios cameras.
Second time around is gonna be worse.
It’s always the balance between Liberty and Security.
And the secret is: Liberty matters. It’s everything. Security is nothing. Do not seek Security, because it’s a trap. There is no “balance” between the two. Choose Liberty.
Easy - vote for a Socialist (they have a “D” listed after their name) or sit on your hands and refuse to vote R because Trump lives rent-free in your brain and you’ll shoot yourself in the foot before voting for someone that he’ll then take credit for.
That’s how you make it happen. And we can all sit on our couches watching TV all day with paper diapers on our faces.
I can’t agree. True security comes from true liberty. Only when we are free are we secure. If we were free to arm and carry in blue cities, they wouldn’t be blue. And crime would be a blip.
No, but unfortunately no enforcers were killed the first time or have been tried or executed since to they will try it again.
For sure if you give them majorities again. I don’t ever want to relive 2021 again, and anyone who doesn’t want to had better get out and vote R.
I think it’s pretty clear. You have people like James Carville saying to the Socialists, “go get your own party.” I have little respect for Carville, but if Democrats get humiliated in this election, advice from people like Carville will find traction in the party. But if we give Democrats majorities people like Carville will be brushed aside and the Democrats will fully embrace the DSA.
And if that happens, do you think you’ll have anything remotely resembling a fair election again?
You can vote Communism in, but you can’t vote it out.
A lot of Americans desperately want to go back to that. They need the structure of being told exactly what to do and when to do it. It also seems to give them a sense of purpose that they lack.
Covid never left, its still here. Difference is, dim-0s arent trying to use it again to kill the economy like they did against Trump.
How many new and innovative viruses have been engineered since 2020?
Up until 2020, you took shots to protect your own life or comfort from a disease, not to protect others. It would have to be a threat or some very extraordinary circumstance for me to have a substance, albeit NOT fully tested, injected into my arm for someone else. “Immunity for the Community”…KMA!
The covid response served a purpose.
It got Trump out of the White House and allowed the dimrats to put Obama’s puppet in the White House.
It's called "the flu". It was the flu in 2019, and 2020, and 2021, and every year before and since.
EVERYTHING about "COVID" was and is a lie. "COVID" taught me that 70%-75% of the population are credulous, ignorant, fearful, selfish idiots, and a threat to the freedom of everyone around them.
Too much power, get it all, stop people.
Well, technically, it’s not literally the flu. The influenza virus is not a coronavirus. But as far as the way it’s spread and how it infects and affects your body, yeah, it’s pretty much the flu.
