March 2011. An entire Japanese island was CUT OFF.
Kesennuma Oshima. 3,000 people trapped.
No power. No water. Harbor obliterated. Freezing cold.

The experts said: "No ship can dock. It's impossible."

The US Marine Corps looked at the raging sea and said:
"Watch us."

They fired up the LCACs.
Massive hovercrafts built for storming hostile enemy beaches.
Ripping across the debris-choked water at 40 knots.
Huge jet engines roaring. Spray flying 50 feet into the air.

They didn't wait for a harbor.
They rammed right onto the frozen sand.

Out rolled bulldozers. Generators. Hot water units. Clean food.
Marines jumped into the freezing mud to rebuild the power lines.
Why?
"Because the children need a warm shower tonight."

When the Marines left, the children painted a massive banner on the beach:
"THANK YOU USA."

Roughnecks with weapons of war, turning themselves into angels of mercy.
THAT is America. 🇺🇸🤝🇯🇵

That is what my tax dollars are for! I have my own story about the quake. I was a scout Master in the bay area suburbs at the time. I had three of my older scouts ask if they could talk to the troop. Sure.

They organized a walkathon for Japanese quake relief and wanted to recruit help from their brotherscouts.

They wound up gathering $2400 for relief. They donated directly to the San Francisco Japanese embassy.

It proved to me that they had been listening all that time. All three went on to earn Eagle. That drive was itself worthy of an Eagle project. One of my proudest moments!

No surprise at all that our wonderful military did the same!

Next big international trip will be Japan, South Korea, and maybe Viet Nam, Cambodia, and Thailand. Depending how much time I have. I am fascinated by the Okinawa fish market vids on YouTube. I gotta do that too.

Okinawa has cheap domestic flights from many Japanese cities, including all the major airports, all for around $100. Might be a little higher as far north as Sapporo.

When I visited my daughter in Kobe (2022), flight from that airport were only about $50, but I was catching a connection to an international flight in Tokyo Haneda which cost me all of about $70!
