IMO:

We’re not going to find some sort of “obvious smoking gun” in either pilot’s background. So far, on paper, they seem well qualified to be flying a heavy freighter. For reasons I hope we will find out, they made some catastrophically bad decisions on their approach. Rather than saying “eff it ... let’s go around” they were bound and determined to get it on the deck. They succeeded ... in the long run, landing is mandatory ... but in the process caused a disaster.

I have been on a couple of go arounds on commercial flights that were really exciting but also a lot of work for the pilots.

I remember my dad reviewing the flight patterns for go arounds before flying to a new airport. They assign specific go around patterns to avoid interfering with other air traffic.

Well, he was an excellent truck driver until they took his CDL last month.

The pilot apparently got his type rating for the Boeing 767 in May. That would put him in low hours in that airframe.

Also, higher seniority pilots would be less likely flying on Labor Day weekend and more likely spending time with family and friends, putting the C Team in the cockpit.
