That's not even so much as a fart in a whirlwind.

11% of Indians don't have indoor plumbing. That means the poop and the pee of 163 million people is going straight to the groundwater.

On top of that, they don't have nearly enough waste treatment plants.

That means the human waste from an additional 830 million Indians is being dumped into some body of water without treatment.

I don't see one guy picking up trash on a riverbank is affecting that problem one iota.

Exactly!
Trash and junk in the river is unsightly. But, the real source of pollution and disease is human waste.
That is an extraordinarily difficult problem for India.
