Regular modern shoe soles (standard rubber, plastic, EVA foam, polyurethane, etc.) are electrical insulators and block the connection. Special conductive materials or components restore a pathway.
Materials and methods that can work
Conductive rubber compounds: Carbon-infused or specially formulated rubber (often black) creates microscopic conductive networks.
Brands use this for full or partial outsoles. Resistance is typically in a range suitable for therapeutic earthing (e.g., low enough for electron flow from natural surfaces).
Metal inserts/plugs/rivets:
Copper (very common), stainless steel, or silver elements that pierce through the sole. These create a direct low-resistance path from the ground to the foot (or conductive insole/laces). Examples include copper plugs in Earth Runners sandals or rivets in leather-soled shoes.
