This is likely just Trump protecting the interests of a major political donor: Matthew Moroun.
The Moroun family owns the Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor.
Canada built another bridge, the Gordie Howe International Bridge, right next to the Moroun family's bridge.
Matthew then makes a $1 million donation to a Trump super PAC and suddenly the temperature in US-Canadian relations started heating up.

I agree with montag813 that Trump should handle US-Canadian relations the way that Reagan did.
