Someone once told me that one should assume that any body of water in Florida has alligators in it. Even check your swimming pool in the back yard before jumping in

Oh yeah, they're everywhere. A lot of suburbs have retention ponds to collect rainwater and gators always find homes there.
And they're super protected, too. So if you kill one, even in self-defense, stand by to answer some tough questions and possibly be charged with a crime.
