I bought a package of boneless chicken breasts from Kroger with a label weight of 4.94lb at $2.28/lb, or $11.26 total. When I got home, I weight the package, which includes the packaging and diaper, and it weight 3.84lb, more than a pound under weight including the packaging. I took it back for a refund and this is where it gets interesting.
The service manager, who was very nice to me, said that she couldn't take the package back because it left the store and asked what I was willing to take to keep the package. She then offered to refund me $8, which I accepted. So I got 3.84lb of chicken breast for $1.04/lb. Even more interesting, I said: "You need to tell the people in the meat department about this." She said: "Truthfully, we've been having some problems with them weighing the meat."
Moral: Weigh you meat to make sure you're getting what you paid for, or buy it at the counter.
Yes, lots of stores do that mark-down a day or two be for the “sell by” date. You can get great deals.
I’m going through our pantry. Found a few things with a “best by” date of 2023!
I go to Foodlion and will get reduced chicken but learned the hard way about ground beef
A problem I’ve NEVER had. Publix, Kroger, etc.
I doubt the chicken was weighed at the store, because the USDA doesn’t want the store people touching raw meat, it came to the store prepackaged most likely.

A consistent problem with misweighed items are not just an inconvenience and costly for customers it is against the law. Contact whatever department is in charge of weights and measures in your state and report this. The store’s scales may need to be repaired or replaced and the staff needs better training.
If the posted sign reads the item is on sale you are legally entitled to the sale price unless there is a date listed that shows the sale has ended.
Did you have Kroger’s “Spy on What You Buy” card? They only give regular price without that and often you have to go to the extra step of clicking on a digital coupon to get the price. I think they have those primarily to advertise one price but charge many people regular price.

Traditional Islamic jurisprudence uses historical units like the dirham, mithqal, and ratl, which are based on specific gram weights (metric) rather than pounds or ounces. Today, modern Muslim-majority countries use the metric system (grams and kilograms), unlike the US. So they can put about anything on the weight of the package and it is going to be hard to determine what the actual weight is as all their measurements are figured at around a number.
Mithqal: A traditional unit used for weighing gold, roughly equal to 4.25 grams.
Dirham: A traditional unit used for silver and general items, roughly equal to 2.97 to 3.12 grams depending on the scholarly school.
Ratl: A historical pound-like unit varying by region, generally around 400 to 420 grams (less than a US pound, which is about 453.6 grams).
Sa’ and Mudd: Units of volume often converted to weights for staple foods like wheat, where a sa’ is roughly 2.0 to 2.3 kilograms.

It is. Best to really get to know them before you make that kind of commitment - there are some ... not so reliable types that you won’t really know until they do you wrong.
I’ve seen those same postings and videos, but I didn’t know that Kroger was doing the same thing. Sad, very sad. Maybe someone should check Meijer and Target.
A lot of stores have a roll of plastic produce bags near the meat section in case the meat pack's shrink-wrap leaks. Hope no one is walking their leaky chicken over to the fruit and vegetable scales and putting it in that bucket without a plastic bag.
Back when I did frequent fred meyers, I too bought the discounted meat. Steaks are already aged.
Problem for me is that kroger forced the jabs on their employees. Consequently, I’ve been there perhaps a handful of times prior since the plandemic. If even.
And that’s besides the egregious harm done to my mother who tripped and fell directly on her face due to a tree-caused defect in a walkway 20 feet from the handicapped parking on the approach to the entrance (their 3rd-party liability firm not only offered an insulting $1000 - which I refused - but they didn’t fix the sidewalk).
AND not one of the gaggle of staff who were outside when the paramedics arrived apologized.
Don’t shop kroger / fred meyer is my advice.
Finding a whole chicken cut up used to be in every store. Now you can only get parts packed separately.
Many cuts of all types of meat have disappeared. It is so strange.
