Labour council in Cambridge has installed squat toilets said to be favoured by international visitors and are charging users £1 per visit.
The public toilets - which include three 'squat-style flushing toilets' - on Silver Street, opposite Queens' College at the University of Cambridge, cost Cambridge City Council £1million to build.
They replaced a 1980s block that was repeatedly flooded by the River Cam, which runs next to it.
The council said the style of toilet was 'preferred by some international visitors'.
Locals have since criticised the 'crazy' £1 charge to use the toilets, which opened last month.
Heather Boyd, from the nearby village of Orwell, told the BBC: 'I certainly think if I'm going to spend £1, I'm not going to squat as well. That is absolutely crazy.'
'I'd much rather they built just a normal set of toilets and charged nothing, than one really slick one and charged a pound,' the 60-year-old added.
Meanwhile, one resident took to social media, writing: 'My grandmother's great achievement as a member of the London Townswomen's Guild (not a jam and Jerusalem organisation) was to get the penny in the slot fee for Ladies loos abolished.

Just the usual “progressives” showing how regressive they are and channeling their inner, less civilized, caveman self. And come to think of it.... squatting does seem to fit their entire existence and personas more than sitting, so....
I had to look up what a squat toilet is. I remember seeing one in Okinawa back in the 70s. No way would I want to use something like that. I also have no intention of ever going to Europe again, so not an issue for me.
Worse than that can’t Asians learn to use a standard toilet? 🚽

About 15 years ago, I spent quite a bit of time in China. I was there on a project but did a bit of touristry stuff while there. One time I took a bus.... don’t recall where but we ended up doing a rest stop along the way. It was a place where plenty of buses would stop and sometimes a few of them would arrive at the same time. I had seen plenty of squat toilets in China but this was the first time walking into a room of squat toilets. They were all laid out in a nice 5 x 5 matrix or so with a trough urinal around the outside. Install several feet of dirt road for those international visitors from countries where the road is a toilet.
Squat toilets must be a challenge to people with knee or hip problems or injuries.
Nor do some from Mexico they toss the paper on the floor behind the toilet.
The were even instructed by Spanish speaking people no change happened.
Common sense no longer exists in England. A hole in the ground has now replaced modern day toilets in Cambridge. So, how many elderly people, handicapped people and others with balance issues will end up falling into these shit holes in the ground? Next, Cambridge leaders will want to bring back donkeys to replace taxis as donkeys are a popular mode of transportation used by “international travelers.” If memory serves me, in the US, just about every state outlawed pay toilets many years ago. How long before these squat toilets, AKA Muslim toilets, get replaced by modern day toilets?
I remember being in Galway Ireland back in the 1980s & they had shacks with holes in the middle that drained directly to the sewer below.
