Early on in us keeping a small flock of (free range when practical) chickens, my daughter named them all.
Omelet, Scramble, Stew (a rooster), etc...
I’ll bet, ‘Over Easy’ was the most popular girl with the Roosters, LOL!
This is making me miss the days when I raised laying hens on a rather large (for me) scale. This was in the 90’s, LONG before everyone and their brother kept chickens.
My farm had an old coop that we cleaned out and painted and re-organized. I started with my first ‘flock’ of 50 chicks from Murray Mc Murray Hatchery out of Iowa. They came through the mail in a box, and you had to go to the Main Post Office to pick them up.
So, once these ladies were established, I started selling eggs. I sold to ‘Steve’s Liquor and Deli’ which was on my way to work, for convenience sake.
I had those clear egg cartons and nice labeling ‘Cage Free’ ‘Organic’ ‘Hand Raised’and each carton was tied with a raffia ribbon bow.
CLASSY!
I sold them to Steve’s for $2.50 a dozen and they sold them for $5 a dozen and the customers were screaming for more!
It was a fun venture. It didn’t make me a millionaire, but it was a great learning tool for my boys and me and it kept us in all the eggs we could eat. The egg sales pretty much paid for the feed costs, really, so eggs for my family were pretty much free.
And the sweetest part? I have my (forever love!) Basset Hound at the time, Rufus. When the chicks were feathering out, they lived in the 3rd floor walk-up attic room in a nice brooder pen with warming lights, etc. They ‘imprinted’ on Rufus as he came upstairs with me each morning to ‘check on the chickens.’ They would follow him anywhere if I was home and free-ranging them for the day in the house yard.
