I like that reference. It was good movie but it was the first movie whose ending I didn’t like. I was horrified to learn it wasn’t just a movie but was an actual war operation (Market Garden). The ending where Lt. General Frederick “Boy” Browning said “Well, as you know, I always felt we tried to go a bridge too far.” became my first sense that war was often just a colossal waste of life conducted by people who had little regard for the humans on the front lines.

Market-Garden slide. Arnhem was a bridge too far in that a Rhine crossing at Arnhem would not have succeeded under any conditions. The Germans were still too strong and the Allied supply situation so bad that even Patton would not have been able to stay on the north bank. If Monty had just kept going after the capture of Antwerp, he could have cleared more of Holland south and west of the Rhine, or cleared the approaches to Antwerp, at a much lower cost that what was eventually paid.
