The reference to “A Bridge Too Far”? It was the title of a 1977 war movie based on the 1944 failed military operation “Market Garden”. If my recollection is accurate, the Allied Forces had a plan to drop tens of thousands of paratroopers behind enemy lines in the Netherlands over a 64-mile corridor. Their ultimate goal was to cross the Rhine River at Arnhem.

The corridor was a single road linking a succession of bridges and the allies were trying to blow up or reclaim all of the bridges back from the Germans. They got control of or destroyed the first 3-4 and set their sights on the Arnhem Bridge, where they were ambushed by the Germans and suffered terrible losses and were forced to retreat with their greatly reduced forces. The General in charge of the operation is reported to have said simply “I guess we tried to go a bridge too far”, allegedly introducing the phrase into the lexicon.

The phrase has since been used to describe any situation where something is impossible to do or is likely to fail. I understood your use of the idiom to mean that asking you to believe Dolly was [...] was asking too much.
