I correct myself. It was actually Bessent who proposed that Carney’s rejection of the trade deal was some kind of political posturing manoeuvre to boost Liberal standing in Quebec’s upcoming election, then Carney would sign whatever trade deal the US wanted prior to your mid-terms.
Lutnick clarified that the French language issue was that the US wouldn’t allow Canada to censor Netflix with our censorship laws, nor would the US allow Canada to mandate that Netflix be able to be translated into French or that streaming services forfeit an amount of their revenues to support French language programming. At no time was the US requesting that Canada abandon its language laws.
