The NBA’s successful formula for profit wasn’t realized until the mid 1980’s even though they were around in the 1950’s on. In a sport like horse racing, the owners are the ones that make the money, not the jockeys. And since the jockeys in the NBA are the players and are demanding more and more hay to eat, the owners are going to have to rethink their formula. They can’t fill up the arenas every time as their sellout percentage is around 70% with their attendance and the big markets like the knicks are only selling out around half their home games and only part of the 17 total games in MSG.
The big money team is the Warriors and their arena is around 18K total. So it goes further and further into the players available to fill slots and not exactly for the competition. It moves from that into entertainment. The WNBA is even worse in that area as they aren’t selling a game but a fashion show. So until they can hit and dunk with enough force to satisfy a blood thirsty crowd like the NBA, they better use more eye liner and roushe as they need a better blush.
