THE SPIN BEGINS: "'The Odyssey' seizes $124M opening in BOX OFFICE TRIUMPH."

"2026's biggest live-action debut."

What they DON'T tell you:

It's only the THIRD biggest opening of the year, behind "Toy Story 5" and "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie."

TRANSLATION: Not as good as a talking toy and a video game movie.

They don't tell you it likely needs around $800 million worldwide just to break even.

Not to make a profit.

Just to break even.

And the studio typically keeps only about 50–55% of the domestic gate - and less internationally.

And the $139.6 million from 73 international markets is absolutely DISASTROUS for the great Nolan when you consider that his own country, United Kingdom/Ireland, only spent $17.4M...

...with every other territory coming in way less.

And finally, they don't tell you that "Odyssey" only has one more CLEAR weekend before "Spider-Man" webs up the box office.

A huge opening?

Relative.

A financial triumph?

We shall see.

The Odyssey box office chart

Those are great foreign numbers. Those countries are much smaller than the US and, again, is Nolan’s best worldwide opening weekend.

Don’t be like the liberals and make stuff up. Be honest.

We just watched Project Hail Mary,a huge hit which a friend liked. I thought it was pretty weak.

It was a fun movie, but the book was much better. I was actually disappointed with the movie after reading the book.

Actually, it is wildly successful

Which just goes to show how ignorant the general movie going public is, how utterly starved they are for some form of entertainment, even if it’s utter garbage.

Spot on. And you don’t even mention that “The Odyssey” is rated R. That eliminates any tickets being sold to all the kiddies that went to see “Toy Story 5” and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.” I have no investment in the movie whatsoever, though I will likely see it at some point, but some folks are so invested in it being a failure that they can’t just let it go.

It did $50 million better than Oppenheimer. 3 hour movies do have an innate difficulty on the revenue. It’ll need legs. But it will probably have legs. I don’t think they’re worried about Spiderman.

It's simply devolved into the anti MAGA movie of the day.
Today's fad tomorrows national embarrassment.

I'm with you. On the other hand, the book was very good.

Sounds like the fly ball was caught on the warning track before it could be a Homer.

I am waiting for the Martin Luther King Jr. movie with a blond, blue-eyed, white man in the lead role.

A black Helen of Troy, and an endorsement from Ben Shapiro.

That seals it. It’s obviously Hollywood at its very worst.

Went to see The Odyssey this past weekend. About 30 minutes in I walked out when the cyclops ate this guy. Should have realized this wasn’t my kind of movie regardless of how high Rotten Tomatoes rates it.

They don't tell you it likely needs around $800 million worldwide just to break even.

It's not a secret.

Actually, it's pretty common knowledge for those who follow industry trade papers. I've known for decades that a film needs to make several times its theatrical take just to break even.

What the OP is "not telling you" is that the film is well on its way to earning profits. It hasn't even begun to collect the years-long revenue from TV, cable, DVDs, streaming, etc.

Young Washington with Kelsey Grammar is an outstanding movie and I urge everyone to see it. Support these patriot and talented filmmakers instead.

Dunno if he likes it, hes been dead since 2013. :)

Wait for the AI Ebert programmed to praise the movie.

I’m waiting to see how much the second weekend dropoff will be. I’m betting at least 50%, but we’ll see.

Yes, I just viewed his movie review. He disappoints me - thought he had more integrity.
