Spain won the World Cup, but Cape Verde won our hearts.

Argentina was fighting during the match, and trying to get under the skin of Spain’s players. Spain didn’t take the bait.

Paredes got a red card after the match for the punches he threw after the whistle. He should’ve have a second yellow during the game, but the ref apparently decided to not have Argentina play without two players.

Mexico plays like this a lot, too, and it’s one of the reasons I don’t pull ever for Mexico.

As I said, from the opening kick Argentina’s only hope was to get it to PKs, and they almost pulled it off.

I’m very glad they didn’t. Spain had a good game plan, and it pretty much dismantled every team.

My proposal is to make it so after the first 30 minutes, instead of going to PKs, have an additional 30 minutes, but it’s Golden Goal (First Goal wins), and there are unlimited substitutions (players who were taken out can come back)

Hopefully doing that, would eliminate most of the need to have PKs decide the game.

Golden goal is exciting but I think you’ll have a hard time getting TPTB to make that change. MLS used to use Golden Goal but they’ve changed that now to allow ties again, right?

Frankly, I don’t understand what the problem with it is? It’s not like the NFL, where both teams don’t get chances to score.

And I would keep the first 30-minutes of Extra Time as is, to please the traditionalists.

If Dirty Sanchez appeared like Trump did, Spaniards would boo him much more loudly than Trump was booed.

He’s on the way out.

Did they deserve the red card? If they did, then no sympathy for them. If they didn’t then we need better refs.

I don't know if they deserved the red card. I didn't see the infraction.

But to my point, I prefer the NHL's way of handling infractions. The maximum power play time is five minutes.

Who wants to watch a game where a team is short handed for up to an entire game.

No thanks.

The reason for the expulsion from a red card is to incentivize the player to stop committing fouls. Yes, it’s harsh. It should be. It’s supposed to be a deterrent for egregious behavior.

The NHL has Misconduct, Game Misconduct and Match Misconduct penalties. All of those penalties involve the player being removed from the game instead of the team playing shorthanded.

They also have Minor and Major penalties that do require the team to skate shorthanded for 2 or 5 minutes respectively.

I think those five levels of penalties are a good deterrent against egregious behavior while it also doesn't turn the game into a joke where a team plays shorthanded for the large part of a game.

I love hockey, too, but the two sports are different. Hockey is more like football where you can sub players in and out pretty regularly.

They’re just different sports. I don’t understand why everyone wants to just change the rules that have been in play for so long.

Used to be only 3 subs were allowed per team, up to 3 windows to sub in. Now they allow 5 subs per game, but in 3 windows. If a game goes in to extra time like it did in World Cup play, each team gets 1 more player to sub if they wish.

Fouls in soccer can be whistled, and given free kicks, but if a foul is egregious it can result in a yellow card. Really egregious foul is a straight up red. Two yellows equals a red. It’s just the way the game is.

Red card fouls are supposed to deter the players from acting out. Most of the time it works.

In this last game, Argentina was only interested in getting to PKs. They didn’t care how many fouls they had to take. IMHO, they were poor sports, as evidenced by the after-the-whistle fights.

I love Messi as a player, but Argentina was given A LOT of breaks that teams don’t normally get to get to the semifinals. Heck, Messi himself should’ve had a card for stepping on another player’s foot, IIRC, in the game against England. Probably a red card foul, but because it was Messi, nothing happened. No card, no foul even whistled.

I realize the ref can’t catch everything. It’s just the way it goes sometimes.

Used to be no substitutes, then they allowed one.

I figure with the further Americanization of the game, they will allow unlimited substitutions, and players can go out and come back in.

Oh, and they’ll ban sliding tackles so they can get more games like the England France game, that the casual American fans love so much.

And longer halftime shows, too!

No wonder the world hates us.

Argentina national team dishonored their country with the antics after the game.

They didn’t meet with the media as required either.

I think Argentina is a great country, but their futbol team wasn’t being good sportsmen, and on the world stage, I don’t think that will age well.
