If the DA wants to send a message, he/she will drop the case. I.e., that would have value in the neighborhood. What an unfortunate footnote. OTOH, it is just an extreme form of a shotgun marriage.

That's a bad analogy. The mother didn't want the guy to marry her daughter, and at 13 she could neither consent to sex nor legally marry. This is about a mother's emotional response to finding a pervert in her house who likely molested her daughter. He won't do that again.
