I wouldn’t say it’s depressing, especially not specifically to Western audiences. I mean it’s heavy on the price of war, and making sure you don’t lose your ideals to win a war. But, most of that is already in the story. The Odyssey is the story of paying an incredible price for a war, even after the war. Honestly if I really wanted to go deep into psychobabble you can see the whole thing as a parable for PTSD. If you find that depressing, well, make less war I guess.
