Box Office: ‘The Odyssey’ Has Epic Opening Day With $51 Million
Variety ^ | 18th July 2026 | Jack Dunn

Posted on 07/19/2026 7:08:47 AM PDT by Cronos

“The Odyssey” didn’t need a Trojan Horse to break into the top of Friday’s box office charts.

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” earned $51 million on Friday from 3,919 North American screens. Early estimates had the saga grossing $90 million to $100 million by Sunday, but after a stellar opening day, forecasts have the film climbing as high as $120 million. “The Odyssey” will soon become the third film in 2026 to open above $100 million after “Toy Story 5” ($159 million) and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” ($131 million). “The Odyssey” carries a hefty $250 million price tag.

An $120 million opening for “The Odyssey” would rank as Nolan’s best since “The Dark Knight Rises,” which debuted to a staggering $160 million in 2012. Weekend one projections for “The Odyssey” blow past Nolan’s 2023 best picture winner, “Oppenheimer,” which made $82 million over its opening weekend and powered to $975 million by the end of its run. Also, with $51 million on Friday, “The Odyssey” has already outgrossed the entire opening weekend of Nolan’s 2014 opus “Interstellar” ($47.5 million).

Other than Charlize Theron, the casting looks awful.

As long as they have been mentioned.

The Critical Drinker

The Critical Drinker is just fun to listen to no matter what the movie it is that he reviews.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIHfhQnmg7Q

Nerdrotic

Nerdrotic gives a more indepth review and points out many historical inaccuracies. Thoughtful review.

The first minute and a half of his review is of some of the actors being interviewed about the movie. It is absolutely puke inducing.

The biggest controversy appears to be the adadptation that was used (some woman) as it downplays male figures and gods and defers to the woman’s point of view. ugh

So, the movie is visually appealing and Nolanesque. No one has a problem with that but why couldnt he have called it something else? Or told another story altogether? Arent there any African stories with women that are worth telling?

No, I havent seen it and not likely to. Will enjoy Hillsdale’s take on this epic of western civilization.

He is, but he needs new clips. I've seen the guys pooping and puking too many times.

“I’m less concerned with how much screen time “Elliot” Page has and more concerned with how many illegals were deported in the short time that I am watching her on screen.”

Fair enough - you’ve got your priorities straight. However, the two are not unrelated.

The same woke DEI confusion that drives Hollywood to bastardize its movies - also accounts for the brainwashing of those who vote to block deportations.

Gary makes very good visual essays with cogent arguments.

Good point. There is a soft pedaled immigration theme in the movie with the fears of the Sea People invading and destroying civilizations. Then the “twist” is the Sea People are people like Odysseus.

Mark Dice pointed out on his recent YouTube video that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has made it mandatory that there be diversity in a motion picture if it wants to be considered for nomination for an award. I don’t watch that many movies, and especially any that introduce changes in the ethnicity and sex for historical figures.

Helen of Troy was white!

The black actress who plays her in the movie never read or studied “The Odyssey”, even though she went to Hampshire College and Yale!

Don’t go to this bogus movie!

I have no interest in the movie. Basically I just don’t care. For multiple reasons. But I’m not taking it as a personal insult that any here interested in or willing to go see it

But I find interesting and a little disheartening that some of the posters here at Free Republic are getting so personal with anyone who says they’re going to watch it.

While nowhere near Democrat nasty, it is a little sad to see.

Rotten tomatoes has 2 ratings:
1. an aggregate NPS of professional critics (I don’t look at this) - basically what % of professional critics say the film is good vs those who say meh or bad

2. a simple aggregate of ordinary people who vote on the movie on a scale. If this has too few reviewers or the reviews seem cookie-cutter, then you should disregard, but if the numbers are large, then there is a good chance they are true.

I do love Critical Drinker - though his frequent expletives make it a personal pleasure one can’t watch with one’s spouse!

“Nolan may have well just cast Whoopie Goldberg. Progs love ugliness.”

THE 45 COMMUNIST GOALS AS READ INTO THE CONGRESSIONAL RECORD, 1963

22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to “eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms.”
23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. “Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art.”
