Sam Neill, the genre-spanning New Zealand actor best known for his starring role in the “Jurassic Park” movies, has died, his family said Monday.

He was 78.

“Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterized his whole life,” the family said in a statement on Instagram.

“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free,” the family said in the statement, which did not specify a cause of death.

Neill, who died in Sydney, had announced in April that he was cancer-free after several years of treatment for blood cancer.

He found international acclaim for his portrayal of paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in the 1993 Steven Spielberg film “Jurassic Park,” a role he reprised in subsequent movies.

A great actor. My favorite line of his “no place is safe here on this island”. Godspeed Sir thanks for your efforts.

Hoping someone will repodcast “Reilly: Ace of Spies” mini-series over the next few days on Rumble. He was great in that.

Unfortunately, that Jurassic movie always makes me want to eat fried chicken for some reason...

Neill is one actor who I liked in pretty much everything he was in. Whether he was the lead or a supporting character. He was the only good thing about Omen III. He elevated the B-rate soap opera the Tudors with his performance as Cardinal Wolsey. And he proved he could lead a blockbuster too.

Recently watched him in a Netflix series ... Untamed. Good show and another great performance from Sam Neill.

I've always liked Sam Neill - he was a versatile actor who seemed equally at home in Hollywood blockbuster "popcorn movies" and edgier arthouse movies. For a good example of the latter, check him out in Perfect Strangers.

Excellent and all but forgotten Australian film from early in Sam Neill's career, with Judy Davis - "My Brilliant Career", 1979.

Judy Davis is an extremely talented and versatile actress herself.

One of Sam Neill's more obscure Australian films was Country Life, an updated version of Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya set in the Australian outback, with Neill as the doctor and fellow Aussie actor John Hargreaves as Uncle Jack. The film's choice of title was terrible, it should have been called "Uncle Jack".
