‘An absolute triumph’: first reactions to Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey are ecstatic
The Guardian ^ | July 7, 2026 | Catherine Shoard

The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan’s three-hour version of Homer’s epic poem, world premiered in London on Monday night, and critics who saw the film there and at early screenings in the US have been sharing their takes on one of the year’s most hotly anticipated films.

“Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey is a colossal origin-myth story of postwar disillusion and a loss of innocence witnessed by the dead,” wrote the Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw, ahead of the reviews embargo lifting next Wednesday and next Friday’s worldwide release.

IndieWire editor-at-large Anne Thompson called the film the best picture contender to beat, and added that Matt Damon “could win best actor”. “My high expectations were met,” she added, calling the film “stunningly mounted”.

Multiple pundits described the film as “flawless” and “breathtaking”, with others singling out Robert Pattinson’s villainous Antinous for particular praise.

Erik Davis called the film “an absolute triumph and a crowning cinematic achievement from one of the great film-makers of our time. It feels like everything Nolan has been working toward with Imax has culminated here.” The film was shot entirely using large-format Imax film cameras, although it will also be screened in non-Imax cinemas.

“The production design is incredible,” continued Davis, “the action is breathtaking, and the scale is unlike anything he’s done before. What really surprised me is how much he embraces horror. Some of the film’s biggest moments are genuinely unsettling, adding a whole new dimension to his film-making while never losing sight of the humanity at the story’s core.”

Does the color matter?

If you’re playing Helen of Troy or Shaft, yes.

“ if he kept his integrity?”

What integrity loss? What is the particular problem?

Spiderman comes out two weeks after The Odyssey. The live action Moana comes out the week before The Odyssey. People are not going to go to the movies three out of four weeks. If you are a family with sons and daughters, the daughters will drag you to Moana, the sons to Spiderman (which has a huge demographic crossover with the Odyssey), leaving the Odyssey holding the bag.

It is ridiculous to say that everyone who saw Oppenheimer, a movie about the making of the atomic bomb, will go see the Odyssey, a movie about Greek mythology (sort of).

The score is problematic. I believe I read they synthesized the tones of 35 brass gongs because “ancient Greece didn’t have orchestras.” It has been reported that Travis Scott - the rapper they have doing some narration - performs the music for the end credits. Yay. That will have them standing in line!

I didn’t say the movie will bomb, I said it will underperform. It might be a $1 billion box office, which means it will clear $100 million. For comparison, Joker cost about $55 million, with an estimated marketing spend of $75 million, crossed $1 billion at the box office and MADE over $700 million.

My personal prediction...I would say Odyssey’s total box office will be $650 to $750 million.

We’ll see. Whatever it is, no way it bombs. That’s my prediction

Why do you feel so passionate about Nolan? Are you his Mom? You get a lot of butthurt at any mention of the possibility that someone might not LOVE this film!

Seriously, the “comparison” is race swapping and transgender-pushing. A 5’1”, 100 pound female pretending to be male is NOT a Greek Warrior, and the most beautiful woman ever - in ancient Greece - was NOT a black woman! The ideal audience is probably male and mostly younger males and many of them are tired of being told they have no excuse for living.

Among older males, many of us are tired of putting up with the fantasies of liberal elites who keep telling us a 100 pound woman can kick the ass of 5 200 pound men. Or that Blacks NEED to be in every film made because....well, because whites are guilty. Even those whose families arrived in the USA 100+ years after slavery ended.

The audience for The Odyssey is not the same as Netflix or the BBC period romances.

And Nolan HAD a reputation for trying to be as real as possible, but now he doesn’t give a damn about anything other than sucking Hollywood dick! If he ever had any integrity, he dumped it before starting on this film.

Not surprising. Most movie critics spent their entire high school years getting stuffed into lockers.

Sean Fennessey and Chris Ryan of the Ringer Network are two prime examples. Total wussies.

Here’s the thing. Take it or leave it leave it as most do here

And your disgusting language aside. All the crap that’s been thrown at Nolan aside-

There are casting choices etc that may look like Dei and may be some sort of Dei.2 or 3

Or may be marketing choices or choices made in order to take the heat off of the project and the actors to help them get recognition in return g
For their superior loyalty

Nolan is a story teller. Look at his wiki page if not his books

I hated Oppenheimer for the pornography as well as the documentary tone. Despised interstellar and inception for the time switching that his audiences love.

His love for the classics that I share with him being an English student, major and teacher, motivates him to tell this important story

The basis of all stories. That people in the next generation have been deprived of in their indoctrination to communism

It will make them think

Watch it. Then judge

Nolan is not in any way a Hollywood lackey. Look it up

That is just silly. Marketing choice? REALLY? And if it was done “in order to take the heat off of the project” - i.e., to bend the knee to Hollywood - that DEFINES selling out.

I don’t care if it makes money or not. It remains pathetic and I’m SICK of Hollywood trying to erase whites from history. Anne Boleyn was not black, and neither was Helen of Troy, and Greek warriors were not 8-10 inches shorter or 80 pounds lighter than their opponents.

It is just stupid. A sane culture would not indulge these fantasies to suck up to the mentally disturbed.
