Same with Movies, roughly half the ticket sales goes to the theater. So yeah, the movie studio has to double what the movie cost just to break even.
Also, marketing which can cost almost as much as the movie itself is not factored in, so in reality a movie has to make 3x what it they say it cost just to break even.
My understanding is that ticket sales just barely cover what the studio charges the theater for showing the movie. The deal usually includes keeping the movie on the screen for an extended run even if no one is buying tickets. That’s what killed the single screen theaters of yesteryear. We had to have multiplexes so that at least one or two hit movies would sell tickets.
That’s why the concession costs are so high. It’s the only way the theater can do more than break even.
