Chicago has one of the most expensive education systems in the world-per capita student expenditures approaching $30,000 per year. Only 18 percent of students are proficient in math, with reading scores not much better.
The only hope is to eliminate the Chicago Public Schools entirely and go to an all–private school system. We would eliminate the property tax as a school financing vehicle. Currently, 15–30 percent of rents in Chicago go directly to fund public sector schools. Chicago renters will welcome a huge rent reduction.
I recommend limits be placed at 10 percent of family income for one student, 16.6 percent for two students, and 20 percent for three or more. Support would come directly from the state and would still be less than the state pays to Chicago Public Schools currently.

> The trend to bring back the trades is a good start… <
That is VERY important. Right now high schools teach things like advanced placement physics (my field) and calculus. Those courses are of value only for a limited number of students.
Perhaps by 9th grade students should be allowed a choice. By then they know (or should know) the basics. Move on to an academic high school. Or enter a comprehensive trades program.
Oh, and one more thing. The trades need to be respected more. The kid with a high GPA gets attention. And so does the star of the football team. An outstanding carpentry student deserves just as much recognition.
**Sad to say but many parent(s) use public school as a place to dump their offspring for the day. And yes, I agree, it ALL starts at home.**
Perhaps the answer is boarding schools where the kids stay overnight from M-F and the return to their parents on the weekends. The $30k/yr should do it. Drill sergeant types doing the teaching. Their feral home atmosphere might be more stable on the weekends as the parents will have more time to work that tax-free overtime and behave more like couples while the kids are gone.
Yes, you are correct. There is no perfect solution
I suppose my answer is, yes, there is no avoiding it - 5%-10% of kids will be for the streets and for police to manage.
but how is that ultimately any different from our present situation?
On the other hand, the large majority remaining will thrive, be uplifted to a better future, and become more stable and functional members of society
There is an old saying, “You can’t make a chicken sandwich out of chicken manure.
Thanks for the link.
**“You can’t make a chicken sandwich out of chicken manure.**
Schools have got to be an 80-20 issue just like deporting criminal aliens. Make both issues national and watch the chicken manure move up to fertilizer status.
The fly in the ointment on this whole subject is that the real fact of the matter is no one in the government or the school system wants the schools fixed.
And I wager that a very large percentage of the people don’t care much.
That pretty much eliminates the whole fantasy that somehow this can be fixed
“That way, people without kids could sell their vouchers to those who needed them.”
Those without kids would not get vouchers.
What’s so different about this smartphone?
It makes kids smarter. You have to learn to use it. Really!
It’s giving me a problem.
Indeed, it is.
This September, The Chicago Public Schools will have the lowest enrollment in over 50 Years! But the CTU still demands more $$$...
This is your sound-proof learning cubicle, Leroy.
Why did the lady on the computer screen change from white to black?
A camera saw you.
....
Why does the black lady speak in an Indian voice when I ask her a question?
It could be that the software was written by an H-1B employee or you were speaking to a woman in India.
....
What about lunch?
You get a choice based on your academic performance.
That would work. Anyone remember catholic schools where the nuns worked for free and slapped kids hands with a ruler? Uniforms wouldn’t hurt either.
My phone isn’t working right. All it says is “Call the teachers’ union office.”
A kid of yours apparently misbehaved.
What do I need to do?
Whatever it takes to get your kid to behave.
*** One was even the son of a family with long legacy and long-term support for our school (the boy was a bully who started fights).***
Kudos to the school for actually kicking the kid out. That’s not how it usually works, in my experience. Maybe it was the last straw, though.

In 2022 the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, announced his intention to create a baccalaureate to promote technical education to the city region’s young people. Upon his third re-election as mayor, Burnham committed to give “everyone who grows up [in Greater Manchester] an equal alternative to the university route so all our young people have a path in life and hope in their heart”.
At 14, students must choose which subjects to study to GCSE level. The MBacc fulfils a similar function to the English Baccalaureate (EBacc), in that it is a guide to help students in their choice, based on subjects which good universities consider necessary. Within the MBacc, seven job pathways exist, which correspond to the subjects and qualifications desired most by employers in each industry:
Construction and the Green Economy
Creative, Culture and Sport
Digital and Technology
Education and Early Years
Engineering and Manufacturing
Financial and Professional
Health and Social Care
English language and literature, maths, sciences and digital skills are ‘core qualifications’ and part of every pathway.

Fraud, like the daycares and the hospices. That money's going somewhere else.
“So we could end up with Muslim private schools being funded by tax dollars.”
I’m afraid your student body did not reflect the diversity of its catchment area. Your funding will be reduced in proportion to the mismatch.
