Old Kentucky Home tells the tale of a Black man sold down the river to labor in the cane fields of Louisiana longing for the life in Kentucky and looking forward to the release of death.

Torn from the pleasant life with his family, perhaps by an economic reversal suffered by his owner, his fate is the worst that could befall a slave, with no release in this mortal life.

*** Foster was born near Pittsburgh on July 4, 1826***

So Stephen Foster was born on the same day that Adam’s and Jefferson both died? Interesting.

My dad was born in Lexington, KY in 1892. As a young man, he played the organ for the silent movies. Then he followed the major resort hotels as front desk manager, north in the summer, Breakers in the winter. He always loved Stephen Foster, and when us three kids came along in the 1930s he would play the piano and we would sing his songs. My mother was tone deaf and wouldn’t join us. So was I, but that never stopped me.

Modern people being offended by something 100+ years old doesn’t make it controversial

One of Foster's lesser known songs, "If You've Only Got a Moustach" (YT Video) made it into Seth MacFarlane's 2014 film, "A Million Ways to Die in the West."

Beautiful Dreamer was supposedly a song about a deceased woman.
