Rhode Island has become the first state to take on big ... self-checkout?
Legislation passed and signed in the Ocean State limits the number of self-checkout lanes a store is allowed to have, and it's based on the ratio of normal checkout lanes with cashiers. The goal is to protect jobs.
Here's WPRI:
'Today, we're protecting jobs and strengthening customer service,' [Rhode Island Governor Dan] McKee said. 'Whether it's helping a customer with an issue, assisting a senior, or ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities, this law is about preserving choice and keeping people at the center of the shopping experience.'
Stores have to have one manned checkout lane open for every three self-checkout lanes.
They also have to have an employee who oversees the self-checkout area, and that employee is not allowed to be assigned any other tasks while they stand around watching people self-checkout.
The law also states that stores all have to have a manned register to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
And if you don't abide by these restrictions, it'll cost you $1,000 a day!

“Stores like Walmart have 8 or 9 checkout lines, but only 1 or 2 are open...”
Not our Walmarts.
Yep. That's the size of it.
There are certainly a LOT of
brazen thieves in America these days
Thieves LOVE self-checkout
With you 100%.
There is no such thing as Service any longer. Today, if one wants anything, the process starts with a homework assignment, either demanding we input information to ‘get in the system’ or alternately, download an ‘app’. I kinda hate the world, as it’s turned out...
Nah, that’s where I draw the line. Besides, I’d miss strolling up and down the aisles picking out new foods to try.
“download an ‘app’”
Drives me crazy. Every company says that, even if I only want to do something with them one time. I’ve got 4 or 5 parking apps for our travels. In Leavenworth, WA, it took me about 30 minutes to download the app, set up a new account, make a new virtual credit card number and all that bother just to pay for an hour of parking time. Then, when we were leaving the lot, I found a hidden payment kiosk that takes credit cards! On top of that, I missed my hour park time by 5 minutes and got a $75 ticket! Fortunately, city hall was right there and I went in to complain. They cancelled the ticket. But what a time suck!
Jasper, Alberta has the right idea. I just scanned a code on a sign on the street and paid with my credit card. Easy. No app required. Of course, these days, scammers print up fake codes and fake web sites, so you could be paying a scammer.
Life used to be so much easier before all these modern “conveniences” made life even “easier.”
/soapbox /rant
I never use them. They do NOT save time.
“Life used to be so much easier before all these modern ‘conveniences’ made life even ‘easier.’”
Amen!
Last month we went to a new restaurant’s opening, and we were supposed to scan a QR code to see the menu. We told the waitress we only had flip phones 😉 so she had to tell us the menu. 😁
(We lied. I don’t “do” QR scanning.)
“Thieves LOVE self-checkout”
And throw in the fact that wearing a mask anywhere you want to in public is now an accepted practice it’s almost a perfect crime.
Walmart and the rest treat criminals
as effectively as the U.K. police 🚓
Because they all saw the mob riots
Not a good trend for the future...
I think we should have a law that limits the number of tiny states.
I will wait on line to use the self-checkout
If they were compelled to merge with CT, that’s two fewer Demmunist Senators.
I will never use self checkout.
A store has access to their own cameras, that you and I dont
Stores can claim you didnt scan some item
Claim shoplifting
No
I will always make store do the scanning with their employees
Case closed
Menus on the phone via a QR code are probably the very WORST of all! You can scan a paper menu in seconds, maybe look at a supplemental “daily specials” sheet, hear the server rattle off what’s good that day, make a decision and move on. Trying to do that with a QR code and a phone takes at least ten times longer. It is awful!
Friggin’ skanky-smelling politicians who have never had a real job telling businessmen how to run their businesses. ROTFLMAO! This country has really gone to hell.

I quit using self-checkout a while back. I don’t like the cameras watching me. At the person-to-person checkout the camera is on the CASHIER.
Many, MANY moons ago, I worked in a very busy San Francisco Bay Area Safeway. A few of us had run track. I was a middle distance runner (440,880). My friend was the sprinter. Back then, we were allowed to chase the thiefs. If my friend was unable to catch them, I kept chasing. One of the ones that I caught was incredulous. He was black, and a white boy out ran him.
Needless to say, we eventually were told to stop. Private security with guns is much better.
