During the secession crisis of 1861 Mayor Fernando Wood proposed that NYC should secede and become independent. Linclon swatted him down with a joke about the front door setting up its own house.

Though I do recall history of the New York Times setting up Gatling guns in their lobby to shoot anti-draft rioters/protesters during the (first) Civil War.
I wonder if NYT would do that today? (rhetorical/sarcasm)

Yankees in New York chasing down blacks in the streets. Beating, killing, and lynching them. The riots of 1863. Torching homes and businesses. It was called ‘one of most deadly civil unrest events in American history’. The official death figure was about 120, but the numbers were probably higher in the low hundreds. 300-400. Probably.
