I read that one variety of plague bacillus has a semi-symbiotic relationship with Siberian Marmots. It can live in them without killing them and secretes an anti-inflammatory hormone that prevents the marmot's immune system from reacting.

When it gets into humans, it goes wild and the human body's immune system is partly defeated by the same hormones. Basically you feel somewhat ill and then keel over dead a day or two later.
