Generally I'm opposed to NIMBYism because it usually represents those well placed in society leveraging their position to push up costs for everyone else: it's a form of rent-seeking.

But the AI buildout is showing the massive corruption of our political system from the national level all the way down to the neighborhood. Decades of warnings about CO2 emissions, nuclear power, etc., are immediately tossed aside when the tech bros throw $1.5 trillion at a problem and any concern about power, water use or noise at the local level are immediately overridden by the developer cash flashed in front of local officials.

It's a wonder to behold how fast infrastructure can be built when all that private cash sloshes around while public projects and normal industrial development are hamstrung by environmental permitting, political money laundering, etc., etc.

Are AI Data Centers well-shielded against the level of directed EMP that can be produced by home hobbyists with a modicum of knowledge of explosives and electronics?

Asking for a friend.

The opposition to data centers often cites as evidence a book that erroneously skewed data by a factor of 1,000 because the author misread and misreported study of a single old data center in Chile.

Opposition constantly cites fake info on water usage, because they are unable to distinguish between water that has been diverted water and consumed water, and claim that diverted water- which is returned unharmed to its source - is the same thing as losing the water. That’s either ignorance or pure scare tactics.

Some new consumer computers can already run Large Language Models (LLMs) on them. I predict that within a few years, personal computers with massive GPUs and massive amounts of RAM will be readily available to the public, making most AI data centers moot.

This appears to be a plan to move the load to a network of personal computers which lowers the load on data centers. Free outsourcing in other words. Thinking of Moore's Law, data processing will double every two years for a while. Where to get all the increased capacity?

Less than 1/20th of what?

How would you or anyone else who isn’t a member of the CCP even know what figures the CCP puts out are accurate? Nobody has provable, accurate data out of China. It’s a secretive society with a government controlled by one party which routinely places people in prison camps because of their alleged religious beliefs, and every business over there is by law run by the PLA. Whistleblowers get shot.

Anyone who has paid even the slightest attention over the years should know China is intensely active in sabotaging as well as stealing US tech, especially but not by any means limited to AI. Just following the topic of Huawei alone is enough of a clue.

You sound like all those people who downplayed the spying going on in the auS nuclear program and defended the Rosenbergs.

“Is kudzu a better choice?”

GMTA. I was thinking that they should plant kudzu instead. LOL!

But the good news is that you can make fabric out of it. So bamboo’s got that going for it.

It’s less about the data centers and more about the massive stupidity surrounding this mania for building them every 50 feet across the country. It’s the dot com bubble on steroids.

They are trying to build resource intensive industry in resource poor areas. Municipalities are falling for this hard, offering tax abatements and special consideration when these things don’t create many jobs and actually depress property desirability because no one wants to live near them.

To make matters worse no one realizes there are few permanent jobs so it creates a massive temporary bubble in property values and housing expenses.

Because of the mania the local governments are just spreading the enormous cost on the residents in blind faith that there will be massive benefits.

Anyone who has actually used AI knows that its actual value is far surpassed by the hype surrounding it.

“Planting bamboo will attract pandas to the area.”

Panda infestation is currently under control. Let’s keep it that way.

Right. I live in TN. It’s everywhere. There are recipes for it. But I’ve never tried any.

The size and breadth of the United States means we can build data centers in many diverse places without ruining the view...

And using too much water and electricity can be controlled through data center attached power plants on major riverways.

To simply deny them is Luddite behavior.
