At one point of my life I owned an Audi A4.
We had a family emergency on Christmas day and I needed to go from Cypress Creek Road to Oakland Park Blvd on I-95. I got on the highway and just floored it. There wasn’t a car in sight, it was broad daylight, and at the time staying under the speed limit was not a consideration.
As I approached the off ramp I glanced at the speedometer. The needle was dropping towards 120. Dropping.
I actually had the shakes that wouldn’t stop when I got to my destination.
We’ve all done that. In a 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass 350, or a 1987 Honda CRX.
Maybe not a Yugo or Prius or Leaf though.
I think almost every car made until the mid 1980s could do at least 120, even If a 10% downgrade was required for some.
As I approached the off ramp I glanced at the speedometer. The needle was dropping towards 120.

I’ve had a few of those experiences...a bunch of them with rental cars trying not to miss a plane. Then time moved on and they started to put ‘speed limiters’ in them.
I am in Germany a lot for business. Take the overnight ferry from Sweden.
Driving 155 mph there is not a big deal anymore. Most decent sedans are speed limited to that 155.
But you still have to look in your rear view mirror a lot because the Porsches, Corvettes, McLarens, and the like will sneak up on you quickly. They are often doing 40 mph faster.
But I enjoy traffic light to traffic light sprints better. I can actually win them here in the states.
