Egypt has received an average of USD 2 billion dollars in economic and foreign military assistance per year from the United States since 1979, just over USD 74 billion in total. It is the second largest recipient of foreign aid after Israel, stressing its significance to U.S. foreign policy.
I wonder what happened in 1979 that caused our State Department to decide that we needed to pay Egypt off into perpetuity?
They must have done something that REALLY helped the US.
We don’t give that type of assistance to other countries in the region that we have an even tighter relationship with (like Saudi Arabia and Turkey)
I recall that when Trump got elected in 2024, he said he was pausing ALL foreign aid except to 2 coontries. I can’t remember which 2 they were though.
