Knicks rally again behind Jalen Brunson’s 45 points to defeat Spurs, win franchise’s first NBA championship since 1973

The New York Knicks are NBA champions.

In a Game 5 of the NBA Finals Saturday night that looked much like the previous four, the San Antonio Spurs took a double-digit lead in the first quarter.

But like in three of the previous four games, the Knicks rallied — this time from a 16-point deficit — to secure a 94-90 Game 5 win and a 4-1 series victory in the NBA Finals.

Jalen Brunson led the way with a legacy-securing 45-point effort as New York’s only reliable source of offense on a night in which both teams struggled from the field. But for New York, the win didn’t have to be pretty. The result is the franchise’s first NBA championship since 1973. And Brunson has secured his place among New York’s sporting greats.

Red Holtzman, who coached the 1970 & 1973 Knicks champions, won 613 games. The Knicks won the title tonight on 6/13.

I guess Brunson “spurred” them to victory.

It looked like the fix was in to extend the series when the refs failed to call an obvious flagrant foul against Wemby.

It would have been his 4th flagrant of the playoffs which would have resulted in an automatic 1 game suspension.

The clod that is the backup to Wemby having to play a significant number of minutes would have been a train wreck.

I really question whether Karl Anthony Towns should have won the MVP. Brunson is great, best player on the team, but KAT's play against Wemby enabled them to win the series - and in five.

Compare it to when the Warrior won in 2015. Steph Curry was the best player on the team, but Andre Iguodala won the MVP for clamping down on LeBron James.

I thought Bogut was the key to the 2015 warriors winning the championhip. He brought bruising physicality to both sides of the court.

Bogut was definitely important. But going into the finals, I think Iguodala had a very low profile, but he won MVP. He just dominated LeBron James.

That team was created by Mark Jackson, and it was created to be a very unselfish team that passed a lot and had advanced teamwork.

Clyde looks pretty good for 81 years old..man, where has the time gone, huh?

They showed Bill Bradley at one of the games. I think he's 82. He looks it too.
