After reading about it elsewhere, the imagery was not supposed to be taken as patriotic but as sarcasm. Some of the audience didn’t realize that and thought the band was being patriotic. Now they know better.

They’re a has been band from the 1990s. Completely irrelevant to today’s music scene.
