My brother had the same problem - we can back from vacation and his entire garden was dug up - he thinks it was possums, but I believe it was skunks.
He’s going to try to put up a varmit-proof fence - good luck with that! I’ve fought gophers for decades in So Cal - and so far the gophers are winning.

They seem to lose interest after a few days. They’re done digging up the Broccoli at least! It’s still another UNNECESSARY STEP I need to take to feed us.

My neighbor went out carp shooting and came back with a bunch. He gave me six big ones, I dug them down under the garden and the next day something had dug up all of them. I should have figured!
