Even today, teachers of elementary school children are, for the most part, held to a higher standard of moral behavior than the random employee who does not work with children.
All bonds of trust he had established with those kids (and many of their parents) has now been dissolved, virtually overnight. It is a different kind of crime, due to the obvious implications that he held a harmful mindset while in midst of these innocent kids.
