President Donald Trump said to reporters on Friday that construction will begin “over the next week” on a temporary arena on the White House South Lawn to host a planned UFC event in June.
Appearing outside of the White House, Trump answered a question on the event, scheduled for June 14 to mark both his birthday and the nation’s 250th anniversary.
“You’re gonna be hosting the first-ever UFC fight at the White House in 45 days, sir,” said an unpictured reporter. “Can you preview the event? Can you talk about the card and what does it mean…?”
“They have some of the greatest champions in the world,” said Trump. “The arena — they’re gonna start building it over the next week.”
“It’s right here,” he added, gesturing to the South Lawn behind him. “It’ll be about 5,000 seats. They’ll have 100,000 people down by the Ellipse with screens, and it’s all free. It’s gonna be great.”
The event will feature seven fights, headlined by Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje.

This kind of facility is not needed at the White House.
If Trump wants to add it to his Mar-La-go property, that’s his business. I’m certain it would be quite a festive venue.
In addition, is it really a good idea to invite thousands of fans inside the White House grounds on a regular basis?
I say no, it is not, considering how badly Secret Service vetted and managed a much smaller group at that dinner last weekend.
Hosting a UFC event on the grounds ‘as is’ would be one thing, and although I like seeing it, there is not a huge slice of the population that does, not enough to warrant new construction for it. 60 years ago, Prize fighting was huge and most the American population watched it every week.
It’s not that way now.
In some ways, the president sees media to be near the same as it was a long time ago. You can add 60 Minutes Newsshow to that. Most people do not follow 60 Minutes on a weekly basis, the way we all did when Morely Schaffer was on it.

I’m not quite getting the connection between events.
I do recall the Million Man was organized by Louis Farrahkhan leader of Nation of Islam. But that was a one time event. I get the impression with UFC, this will be a place for ongoing events.
