An elderly motorist is accused of driving through a group of bicyclists in Georgia — knocking one over and fracturing his spine — before speeding off in a hit-and-run that was caught on camera.

Jerry Wayne Ross, 72, flashed a smile in his booking photo as he faces charges for the alleged hit-and-run with his Honda Pilot, all caught on video, on April 23 in Cherokee County, Ga., according to Fox 5 Atlanta.

The North Georgia Cycling Association was on its weekly Thursday night ride when the older driver was accused of driving up on the group in a suspected road-rage incident.

The cyclists were in the middle of their 32-mile ride through Cherokee County when Ross appeared behind them, blasting his horn for nearly two miles along Sugar Pike Road in Canton.

“Just excessive. Didn’t let off the horn,” Richard Collins, the leader of the group, told Fox 5 Atlanta.

Ross was found hiding out at a neighbor’s house down the road after officials from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office spotted damage to his SUV consistent with hitting a bicycle.

The suspected driver told authorities he had encountered the group of cyclists but denied responsibility, blaming the bikers for the collision, saying the riders had been in the middle of the road, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

Ross was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault, aggressive driving, hit-and-run and failing to maintain distance, according to jail records viewed by The Post.

He remains behind bars in the Cherokee County Jail with his charges totaling $24,540.

After finding myself stuck behind groups of inconsiderate cyclists who have no business on the road, I can’t say I blame him.

I ride road bikes, mt bikes, motorcycles. Never in packs. The roadies are the worst. Sprawled all across the lane holding up lines of cars. Hate them with a passion.

As much as I’d like to agree with this, because I can’t stand cyclists either, the guy had the whole other side of the road to pass and chose to stay in the lane the cyclists were in. This could have and should have been avoided.

Looks to me like another instance of a group of arrogant cyclists blocking an entire lane of a 2-lane road and refusing
to move to single file so a car can pass them. I’ve experienced this BS in Florida, having to go 15mph in a 35mph zone because these jerks want to ride next to each other in a group and far outside the bike lane. They do it to be a-holes and they know it.

Well, there it is. This was a road-rage thing, and not an age-related thing as the article’s title suggests.

I’ve been a road cyclist for decades and a mountain biker for decades. I wouldn’t mind seeing group rides banned.

Bicyclists are almost as obnoxious as liberal, white women. That said, the driver needs to be punished.

I saw one of those cycling clubs just the other day (I was driving in Cherokee County). Fortunately, they were going in the opposite direction. But, it was a group of about 30 riders, refusing to ride single file, blocking the entire lane, with a very long line of cars backed up behind them. Motor vehicle drivers are encouraged to "share the road" with cyclists, but the cyclists in these groups have more of a "we own the road" mindset.

Not excusing this guy's criminal act, but I do understand the frustration. Part of the problem is that there are rarely shoulders on the roads around here, which is why I don't even try to ride here.

He also didn't "CRASH INTO THEM". He rubbed them.

Unless it was a winding road with little sight distance and/or oncoming traffic.

The cyclists should be charged with obstructing the road and in jail with him.

"the guy had the whole other side of the road to pass and chose to stay in the lane the cyclists were in."

That is not usually the case. These groups are riding on single lane roads, which are curvy, hilly, and with lots of traffic coming from the other direction. It is often impossible, for stretches of several miles, to pass the cyclists by crossing over into the oncoming lane.

Yes, indeed. Sometimes through no fault of your own, you’ve just got to slow down and wait. Folks who can’t do that shouldn’t be driving.

Oh, and if this guy was so upset he should have called the cops on the cyclists. What he did was attempted murder. He should get the appropriate prison time for that.

Why all the hate on bicycle people? We ride in a group because it cuts down on fools like this. I hope he has plenty of time to reflect on his poor decision in lockup.

We don't drive our truck down their bicycle paths.

All rides I’ve been on, the group will thin to single file and wave you around if it’s clear. Don’t be this guy.

Cyclists are supposed to ride as far to the right as possible, and move to single file and allow traffic the chance to pass. They clearly did not.

He shouldn't have rubbed them but you asked why they are disliked.

Really. I have almost been hit multiple times in a bicycle lane. Bike paths no only the ebikes who are not supposed to ride on them.

Given the political orientation of arrogant, activist cyclists who are equally & intentionally obnoxious here, my first thought:

My hero.

Why hate bicyclists?

Because we’ve all seen these idiots on bicycles stay across the lane marker when they could have stayed to the right of it and not blocked traffic. It’s the leftist implementation of you have to stay 3 feet away from me so I don’t care if I block traffic.

Same as the protestors who block traffic and some find cars are bigger than they are. Minneapolis comes to mind.
