“Big Brother is watching you” is no longer a fictional admonition. Everywhere you go, your location is recorded by phone technology, license plate readers, Uber and Lyft transactions, and cameras.
Privacy? Forget about it. Your location history is in the hands of many tech companies. Can the police and other government agencies force tech companies to share that information about you? The U.S. Supreme Court took up that question on Monday. The court’s decision could have a widespread impact on your privacy.
If your location history puts you within a 1-mile radius of a bank robbery with hundreds of other people, you could become a suspect, swept up in the wide net cast to find the perpetrator.
Many people find the growing surveillance creepy, but law enforcement is using this technology – called geofencing – to solve crimes rapidly, including some that would go unsolved.
During Monday’s oral arguments in Chatrie v. United States, the justices tackled this tradeoff between privacy and effective crimefighting, and how the U.S. Constitution, written over two centuries ago, can be interpreted to safeguard your rights in the age of Big Brother.
In 2019, a gunman robbed the Call Federal Credit Union in Midlothian, Virginia. Stumped, the police secured a “geofence warrant” instructing Google to produce location history records for every digital device within a 17.5-acre circle around the crime scene for a two-hour timeframe. Then the police asked Google for the identity of three device users, including the man ultimately charged with the crime, Okello Chatrie.
Chatrie claims his Fourth Amendment right to be protected from “unreasonable” government search was violated when police used geofencing and compelled Google to disclose his location history.

There have been people incorrectly arrested because the Flock Camera put them near the scene of a crime and their vehicle was the right color.
Weird because they don’t seem to know the wherabouts of one Maxwell Yearick.
The whereabouts and hereabouts should be on ALL “elected” representatives. WHAT have they got to hide?
That is because he died on a roof in Butler, PA. He didn’t take his cellphone where he ended up.

I can foresee where people will be limited by technonolgy in their ability to travel outside a predetermined area, sort of a 21st century version of internal passports. If you’re on a ‘list’, you can’t leave your area.

Then they see that your gun is not in a safe like they want, and then they see that 15 round clip...

Personally, I have dropped off the grid. Except for Medicare, Social Security, military retirement, car tags, drivers’ license, tax returns, and bank accounts the government has no idea what I’m doing. Freedom!

I disconnected the gps crap on my truck. I leave my phone at home a lot or put it in a Faraday bag I carry in the truck. Pass cash at every place that will take it. So, I only have to dodge every freaking camera on/in every business, utility pole, and porch in America, land of the free. Yeah...
So take the personal step of getting rid of your mobile phone. You are not as important as youthink you are. You do not need to be connected alla time.
That is mobile phone agitprop.
And, you have willingly become a slave.
With this information...think about the whole performative governance episode involving ICE.
They didn’t need to behave how they did. They could have grabbed these people silently while they were at the gas station or during a traffic stop on the freeway.
They didn’t need to march through neighborhoods or grab people from their places of work.
The reason they chose to do it the way they did is because they wanted it to APPEAR as if they were doing something significant. “Performative governance”.
In reality, their donors want MORE immigration (legal and illegal). They never intended to do mass deportations despite their promises during the campaign to do so.

Mine aren’t but I do understand that many times of the day, my location can be known. And more importantly my location history can be figured out. My phone that sits on my desk even when I leave the house does not give an accurate description of where I am. My small town has very few ring cameras. The businesses have very few cameras. There are some and all you need is one. Modern cars are talking to satellites or cell towers. So if you have a modern car especially an electric car like a Tesla, Your location and your picture is known anytime you are even near your car. The one thing people don’t realize is that my wife’s phone and my children’s phone are also tracking me. Because I travel with other people. Phones figure out which other phones are traveling with my phone or in my car. They are linked to me. So, even if I don’t have a phone on me, my wife does. And her phone is known to be associated to my phone. And the police will go after that if they need to. If you buy a Tesla you are certainly being tracked everywhere. If your smart phone is with you, you are tracked. And if you are connected to WiFi or a cell tower you are tracked. If you are in a city you are tracked. And most importantly, your movements are recorded and stored. So, you don’t have to be of interest now. But if you become of interest in the future, your recent past will be known instantly.
