I know no “subsistence” hunters, from all who hunted with permits through the Midwest. It was a passion and they ate the meat, but none “required” it and were farmers or tradesmen.
There might be subsistence hunters in Alaska and north Canada, but most every hunter has a real job and are not explicitly “living off the land.”
