"You know, that's wrong! That's wrong! ... Now I'm being told what I can buy and can't buy, and I don't think that's right."

"I love my fruit, I love my sweets too!:

Is someone going to tell her that fruit is loaded with sugar??

On Monday, Florida changed its state welfare policy to exclude junk food from being purchased with SNAP funds.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is meant to help needy people buy food by using tax money to give them supplemental nutrition.

The state of Florida is not telling residents that they can't buy soda and ice cream with their own money. It's telling them they can't use money taken from other Floridians to buy those items. You are free to be morbidly obese on your own dime.

Entitlements lead to attitudes of entitlement.

“no one receiving government assistance should be allowed to vote.”

Haha! I suggested that in a lecture once and you should have heard the “Karen” explosion!! She was still harping at me two months later. I agree with you that only citizen stakeholders should have the vote, not dependents. I consider welfare dependents to be slaves of the state and federal government with the only difference being that they are not required to do anything. Of course, I am not including the disabled in the same category because I do have compassion for those who truly need help.

no one receiving government assistance should be allowed to vote.

My "no way in hell it would ever get ratified, but I think it would be a good idea" amendment to the Constitution would be to have tax-weighted voting.

When you go to the voting place (and yes, voting in person or in front of a notary would be required) you get handed a record of what taxes you have paid to support the office of each candidate. Votes for candidates for federal office would be weighted by the federal taxes you paid. Votes for school board candidates would be weighted by the property taxes supporting the school, etc.

One thing to remember is that all taxes are paid by the consumer. Coverage for property taxes for rented housing are included in the rent, or the property owner goes out of business.

What would amaze people is how much they pay in taxes. Things like gas taxes are 'hidden' and paid for by nearly everyone, so even those on some form of welfare are likely to have paid at least some taxes.

And think of how effective it would be to tell a voter, just as he is getting ready to vote, how much he has paid in taxes!

There are farmer’s markets in NYC, and co-ops in the suburbs.

Exactly. That’s how it was in the ‘50s and ‘60s — at least it was where we lived. Free government cheese, peanut butter, powdered eggs, butter. There were families in our church who were recipients.

So the government decides what you can buy. Great.

Who knew that generational poverty would become such a huge thing in this country?

LBJ was hoping his plan would work.

I bet SNAP covers milk, cream, sugar, cocoa powder, and flavorings.

It does. One of the things I teach is that if you never buy pre-made sweets you will find that you are eating a lot less of them. Some times by over 75%. The more effort you have to put into something the less you will do it. You will stop and think if it is really worth it.

But if all you have to do is stuff it in your mouth you are not going to think about it the same way.

About $4 a quart the last time I did the numbers.

The thing is that it’s thick and not full of air. 1/4 c per serving is almost too much. Compared to 1/2c for store bought stuff, it is a bargain.

I just saw that Breyers changed the name of their stuff to “frozen dessert” because it has too much air whipped into it. That’s a shame because they used to be good. Now it gets all crystallized in the freezer.

The mixer/bowl was an add on to my cuisinart mixer. Less than $40 when I got them. Makes about a quart and a half at a time.

“So the government decides what you can buy. Great.”

NO....the government is restricting what people can have when using taxpayer paid SNAP benefits.

They can buy whatever the hell they want with their own damned money.

And if they don’t have their own money for junk food then they can DO WITHOUT.

So the government decides what you can buy. Great.

Incorrect of course.

You may buy what ever you like.

But the taxpayers are disinclined to pay for anything you like.

Such as beer, cocaine, premade sweets, cigars and such.

Now if you, out of the goodness of your heart, want to buy such things for this woman you are certainly free to do so.

I know the difference between, "can not buy" and "will not be paid for by other people" is hard to figure out but I am confident that you can do it eventually.

I don’t feel the need to defend myself. I’m guessing “the government “ will have to create another new food/SNAP administration that will cost a couple of hundreds of billions of dollars with hundreds of SNAP compliance officers that overlook what their favored groups buy. While strictly enforcing the rules for say, Christians and conservatives. Please don’t reply with ‘Christians and conservatives never need a hand up.’

I don't feel you have to defend yourself either.

You are quite free to indulge in wild fantasies such as "I'm guessing “the government “ will have to create another new food/SNAP administration that will cost a couple of hundreds of billions of dollars with hundreds of SNAP compliance officers that overlook what their favored groups buy"

No. That is not the way it works.

Please don't reply with ‘Christians and conservatives never need a hand up.’

Actually they do. I have known several who have been on government assistance.

But you go out and buy a truck load of Little Debbies to hand out if you like.

No one is going to stop you.

We are just not going to pay for it.

Which is as it should be.
