The legendary musician’s family confirmed his passing in a statement to People on Wednesday, sharing their “deep and profound sadness.”

“Many seem to be unbelievably immature.“

Maybe there is some immaturity in how they handle the negatives but I think the primary problem is that A.) what brings them into each others orbit is necessity (how good they are at what they do) rather than personal attraction and B.) that creating music is very personal and unless they are yin and Yang there’s going to be conflict.

My sister was the director of a theater in our town. Despite being “podunk” here, she managed to score some big acts over the years, one of them Dave Mason.

My wife and I occasionally volunteered at the theater. One day my sis called needing a “runner” for Dave Mason and his band. A runner or “gofer” goes out and gets special food, drinks or whatever if needed. I fell over backwards with her request. Been a big fan since his Traffic days.

I had little to no interaction with Mason while on duty. He came off as well-grounded to me.

A special treat: about two hours before the show, he and his band ran a system check. I was sitting all alone in a 1200 seat theater 10 rows back from the stage when Mason came out and rehearsed “We Just Disagree” and “ All Along the Watchtower” the latter being my fav of his, and Mason’s version just rips it! I was his only audience during that system check.

Before he played Watchtower during the official show, he told a story about him and Jimi Hendrix knocking around one night. Mason encouraged Hendrix to do a cover of Watchtower, and the rest is history. BTW: Mason plays the 12-string acoustic on Hendrix’ studio track.

Yes, the earliest time I ever heard of bands that had great music, but their musicians couldn’t get along in spite of how well they played together was Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker. They actually had fights on stage.

There’ve been moments of despair
There’ve been times I could not care
I was the lonely one
Then You showed myself to me
And I found I needn’t be
Another lonely one

Running in the wilderness and dreaming in the sun
Cryin’ to the sky at night for GOD’s eternal Son
