This is not surprising. The Catholic Church has a long-standing, increasingly vocal tradition of being anti-war, although it traditionally balanced this with a strict “just war theory”. While supporting peace, popes have condemned specific conflicts and the nature of modern warfare for over a century, with recent teachings, particularly under Pope Francis, declaring war a “crime against humanity”.

Pope Pius X pleaded for peace at the outbreak of WWI (1914). Pope John Paul II actively opposed the Iraq War and declared “war is never inevitable, it is always a defeat for humankind”. The church is not being consistent with this theory as it has never realized the application of evil, just it’s existence. Peaceful ways are not always the way to peace and there is evil in the world that reacts as predators for the sheep. And they have to be restrained or destroyed using any means of protection.

As a purely political matter, Trump has nothing to lose by picking a fight with the Pope. It fires up the Evangelical base and will not put off Catholic MAGA supporters. It only alienates Catholic anti-MAGAs, i.e. Biden voters.

Personally I think that other than Trump himself, the man most responsible for making Trump president was Pope Francis. If anyone is curious why, ask and I shall explain!
