I think payments will be electronic in the future.

I’m retired.
I pay my taxes on April 15th or there about.
The penalty is cheaper than the risk of
trusting a Democrat run government
to be fair.
I’d bet and win that most IRS
and Justice Dept. employees
are Democrats.
I’d like to see the people in America
that actually pay Federal all refuse
to pay on April 15th for any thing
other than the military, inter state commerce,
Et Al; Things expressly stated in the
Constitution and not inferred by some
un-elected Judge.

“...it’s the only way they can save money...”

My brother-in-law would always get so excited when he got his refund. He’d go out for a big fancy dinner, a show, buy stuff he didn’t need and gamble the rest of it away. Every year. I mean - why not. It’s “free” money. (Never once thought to pay off some of the debt on his credit cards).

Although after he died and no money in his estate, my wife would get letters from his CC or debt relief programs and tell them he had passed away, send the death certificate, and BIL was off the hook in the end. Not the best way of becoming debt free IMHO.

If you are responsible, is it good to do then? (Reduce withholding)

And these people vote.

I got to the point where I paid more in income tax than I used to make in a whole year. Some might call that progress.

“Change”? Why doesn’t he say “lower” your withholding? I suspect the treasury department is sending out a buncha large checks that the majority of the people are getting.

I always add 500 dollars to withholding besides the 250 they take every month due to my small business on the side. It works somewhat well.

yes, I am thinking something is in the works. I have been fantasizing about Trump going around Congress by telling everyone to not pay their taxes (and do an executive order saying no taxes this year). A gov’t shut down of sorts....Yeah...dreamin’

Of course. Sadly, the number of people who are diligent about personal budgets are greatly outnumbered by those who are not. This is why consumer revolving credit is such a massive business. That’s why pawn shops have existed for thousands of years.

I’d rather hear Bessent announcing a 30-day Federal tax holiday.

If you get a refund, you gave the government an interest-free loan.

Maybe, but I've known a lot of people over the years that if you gave them an extra $20/week in their paycheck, they would spend $30/week more.

Then again, anyone getting a large refund may be inclined to make a large, many times frivolous, purchase.

It still costs money to process payments. Cut the payments, cut the staff.

I don’t know how my company does it, but their withholding is almost perfect for those on the standard deduction. If you were to multiply the biweekly paycheck by 26 and enter that into the tax form it would be almost even. Earning interest, itemized deductions, a second job or even a pay raise could thrown that off, but there is no room to lower withholding otherwise. In the past two years I essentially owed my interest earned times marginal tax rate.
