From his first full season in 1973 through the ’81 campaign, Lopes played 1,139 games at second base for the Dodgers. In 833 of those contests, he was joined in L.A.’s infield by first baseman Steve Garvey, third baseman Ron Cey and shortstop Bill Russell.

I remember those halcyon days well, growing up in LA and when I was still a Dodger fan. Rest in peace, Davey, and thanks for the memories.

I was at first astounded because it doesn’t seem all that long ago that he, along with Garvey, Cey and Russell, made up that legendary Dodger infield in the 1970s.

“Overall, Lopes hit .263 with 155 homers in his career, posting 42.4 WAR, according to Baseball-Reference.” Pretty darn good Davey.

Even with my advancing memory loss, I can still name more players from the 1970s than from the last 30 years.

RIP Davey Lopes.

Sad news. One of the Dodgers infield that played together a long time.

Garvey, Lopes, Russell, Cey.

Pennants in 74, 77 and 78. World Champs in 81, but that year Sax began taking Lopes place.

He was a rookie at 27 and was still stealing bases at a great clip when most guys are slowing down. He didn’t have the long legs or raw speed of a Rickey Henderson, but he was QUICK, and he always timed his jump perfectly, which is why his stolen base % could go against ANYONE.
