BREAKING: Local School Implements Mandatory Nap Time, Sparks Citywide Bedlam
Missouri City Kansas Times ^ | April 1st | Jane Doe, Staff Writer

In an unprecedented move that has left parents and students scratching their heads, Maplewood Elementary School announced yesterday that starting next week, all students will be required to take a mandatory two-hour nap during school hours.

The new policy, dubbed "Dream Time," aims to improve focus and overall student well-being.

Principal Susan Bright explained, "After extensive research, we found that a short nap can boost creativity, memory, and happiness. Plus, who doesn’t love a good snooze?" The school is installing custom sleep pods in every classroom, complete with lavender scent diffusers and plush pillows.

Parents initially reacted with surprise and a little confusion. Mark Thompson, father of third-grader Lily, said, "I thought it was a joke at first. My daughter already struggles to wake up early; now she has to nap in the middle of the day?" Others expressed concern about productivity and the potential for classroom chaos. Students, however, are thrilled. Eleven-year-old Max Ramirez said, "Best day ever! I’ve been dreaming about this for years." Teachers are equally optimistic, with some joking that they might join in for a quick rest themselves.

City officials are watching closely. Mayor Linda Carter announced plans to implement "Dream Time" in all city schools if the pilot program proves successful. "It's a bold step towards revolutionizing education," she stated, “and if it helps students, why not?”

As April Fool's Day approaches, many are wondering whether the "Dream Time" initiative is real or just an elaborate prank. But given the school’s quirky reputation, it’s safe to say that for now, students can look forward to catching some Z’s—at least for today.

TWO HOURS?

I don't understand entirely what is going on but do have a perception that many families have poor, to no structure and no bedtimes.

Gone are the days of public service announcements to the effect of "It's 8:00 O'clock, do you know where your children are?".

Midnight basketball is just the tip of one iceberg.

No, it was not an April Fools joke. It was a real post sharing my experience in A.I. at the workplace.

Yeah. I read it. You’re right. It was well crafted and worth considering.

But it didn’t have to do with Kristi Noem’s husband with size 50 lopsided boobs... So there’s that.

Sorry.

How many here realize before sustained night lighting most civilized cultures slept in two phases

Usually 8-12 then up two hours then say 2-6 depending on seasons
Pretty much four hours then up two then four more sleep

I never knew this till a few months ago

"As a 1st through 3rd grader (1960s) this was the norm."

I went to grammar school in Rochester, NY in the 50's. I don't recall our rest times going past Kindergarten. We did have a snack break, but you had to bring your own snacks. My mother always gave me saltine crackers with a little butter on them.

If was only 15-20 minutes for us and we didn’t always do it. Funny, I could swear I just got a whiff of white school paste.

"QUICK! THEY NEED MORE MONEY FOR “EDUCATION” because the teachers are now baby sitters too!!!"

My niece's husband works for the Recreation Department in Rochester, NY. He's only got about 5 years before he can retire. He runs one of the Rec Centers in the City, and about 3-4 years ago, the City was making the Rec staff teach kids how to read. During Covid, the Center was shut down for regular business, but they still had to hand out breakfast, lunch and snacks during the day to kids, parents, and homeless people that stopped by.

We brought a small rug from home, put it on the floor of the classroom and took 20-minute naps. It doubled as bathroom time. I remember needing to go to the bathroom real bad and when I help up my 2-fingered signal to the teacher, she said to go ahead but don’t forget to close the door because the other kids were trying to sleep!

"I hate April 1st."

I hate it too. I got married on April 1st. The JP was two hours late because "nobody gets married on April 1st." I should have taken it as an omen and gone home. Been happily divorced 47 years.

Oh yes, I remember nap time in about 1954 or 1955-we had rugs to lie on. I don’t remember pillows. Now fast forward to 2026-I am back to nap time with cookies and warm milk or hot herbal tea!
54-55 Kindergarten.
