An official from one of the countries mediating between the US and Iran tells The Times of Israel that US President Donald Trump appears to be leaning toward ordering a major US ground operation against Iran, with Washington convinced Tehran will buckle under such military pressure.
The official intimately familiar with the mediation efforts says the US privately recognizes that Iran is not likely to agree to the concessions presented in Washington’s 15-point plan and has dispatched thousands of troops to the region in order to capture Tehran’s Kharg Island on Trump’s orders.
A second official from a mediating country warns that while the US may be able to capture the island, holding onto it for an extended period of time will require many more soldiers and an extended period of fighting — far beyond the four-to-six week window that Washington has told the public that the war would last. While Saturday will be the four-week mark, the US still claims to be well ahead of schedule.
Both officials from mediating countries say that the Islamic Republic is not likely to capitulate, regardless of whether a ground operation moves ahead.
They insist that Iran will now agree to terms that it wasn’t willing to accept before the US launched the war.
Trump on Monday announced that he was delaying until Friday his deadline for Iran to agree to his 15-point proposal for ending the war or face a bombing campaign against its power plants.
Thousands of additional US Marine troops are slated to arrive in the region around that new deadline.
Those 13 mil aren’t fighters against invasion.
Tucker, is that you? Like Trump didn't have his own intel. Pathetic.
from where?
The oil on Kharg comes from the mainland in pipes...if you are going render the Strait of Hormuz “safe” and have tankers load at Kharg you will have to take (”boots on the ground”) the coastline 50 miles or so inland of Kharg and also at the strait which means urban warfare in the streets of Bander Abbas and taking the island of “Qeshm”. About 80% of the Iranian “locals” will be friendly’ish (they oppose the Islamic Republic govt.), but that leaves 18.6 million govt,/IRGC/Basij supporters to deal with out of a 93 million total population.
They would tell you they already have had 10,000 plus unarmed die for their country. (They claim 30,000 dead I’m sure that’s exaggerated so, 10K+ is likely a good lower range.)
I do not understand why there hasn’t been a major effort to get arms in there. Maybe its happened and we don’t know about it.
Kharg island can be hit from at least 25 different cities with FPV drones. These are mostly small communities within 40 KM of the island. They are within attack range.
Within 200 KM, there are hundreds of cities where Shahed drones can be launched to strike specific coordinates on Kharg island.
Check Google Maps. Attack sources are obvious. No doubt there are others which are not so obvious.
Does the IRGC have the drones? Can they get them into launch positions? Can they coordinate repeated strikes across dozens of launch sites? They probably cannot launch twice from the same position. But they only need to hit US Forces on a first wave strike. Any significant American casualties will instantly halt all political support for continuing the war. That is what the IRGC is counting on.
Maybe they do not have enough missiles and drones left to counterattack. That is what we are counting on.
We have hit over 10,000 sites in the last four weeks. But a "90% reduction in Iranian missile/drone attacks" is really not good enough. We need to get their attack capability down to zero - at least within 200 KM of any island landing. That is because we have no effective defense capability against FPV drones. We do have some capabilities against the GPS guided drones like the Shahed.
Bunching up a lot of US troops on an island makes them convenient targets. It is a very big risk.
The best defense we have now against missile/drone attacks is to destroy them before they can be launched. That means constantly blasting anything in the coastal area that could hide or carry a missile. It is a very big area. We might be short on bombs to cover it all.

Give me a break....
Hello traitor.
Risky? Did you ever serve. Risk comes with the job.
This is what we voted for. Action. The future is now.

Did your momma have a plan?
Bullshiite exaggeration! We will not invade Iran. If we invade it will be a tiny part of it called Kharg island, to turn off the spigot for crude sales to the Chinese. This means IRGC and Basij will not be getting paid. They go AWOL to help out their families to survive.
Liz is a TDS sufferer. It may be terminal.
I presume you think taking Kharg is a great idea.
Please tell us why.
