A Gen X woman has pushed back against the idea that women become "ugly" in mid-life, telling viewers online that embracing aging has been the most-liberating part of her life and rejecting the pressure to perform femininity as she gets older.
Jennine Jacob, 51, from San Francisco, California, shared her perspective to Instagram after seeing a viral discussion about women’s looks in their 40s. In comments to Newsweek, Jacob said she wanted to offer an alternative view—one rooted in acceptance rather than anxiety.
"I had seen a woman speak about how no one prepared her how ‘ugly’ she would be in her 40s," the personal stylist said. "I wanted to share my experience, because I didn’t see it that way once I accepted my aging process."
Jacob added that her relationship with appearance has shifted significantly over time.
"Admittedly, in my 40s, I did try to fight aging with Botox, face tape, and filters," she said. "But my career really took off when I walked away from all of that. In my experience, accepting my age and aging has been the most-liberating part of my life."
Jacob's comments came after the video she posted to Instagram on March 7 sparked widespread engagement and discussion. Shared via her account, @jennine.jacob, the video has been viewed more than 63,000 times, receiving over 3,800 likes alongside a stream of supportive comments from viewers.
In the clip, Jacob appears speaking directly into the camera, responding to the idea that women are unprepared for becoming "ugly" in mid-life.

We all have our problems and difficulties.
I chose to have children. They have been the greatest challenge and the greatest joy of my life.
I feel sorry for those who gave up that experience.
There’s a whole “nose ring theory” thing about that.
In short, it is that women who wear nose rings want to display their trauma(s) where everyone can see them. Their trauma is their identity.
MILF bump.
Well this is some bullshi*, because I am 61yo and living my best life! I was going to post a picture of myself to show what a conservative woman looks like at 61yo, no rainbow hair, no nose ring, no angry face, I don’t even care that it could out me. Unfortunately turning my photo into a html seems too laborious. I might do it later if it’s not too complicated. There has to be an easier way than what I was trying!
Same! At almost 60 hubby still pursues me as he did when I was 30. I sure don’t look the same but it’s like I have never lost that appeal to him (thank the Lord!)
Who thinks woman get "ugly" in mid life?
Just because men of all ages may have a built-in biological predisposition to finding younger females more attractive than older females doesn't mean we find older women "ugly".
I will say though, that wearing those big stupid glasses like that and a ring through your nasal septum does make a woman look ugly. But that is her choice. Glad she has accepted it and doesn't bitch about it, except in Newsweak articles.
No one here is suggesting the first thing women should do is to keep their weight down. The attitude comes second as you can’t get the attention without starting out slender in most cases. A bubbly personality can go ok with a bubbly body but even they get tired of the facade.
That’s rude!
Right after posting “Perfect is the enemy of good-enough”, you got snobby and apathetic.
But while you’re virtue signaling to everyone about how perfect YOU are...
What about those of us (like me) who lost our only child and the pain of that loss was so great that it destroyed the marriage we had and now we’re each alone?
How about having just a tiny bit of empathy for strangers in their pain while puffing yourself up in your judgy self-righteousness Mr. high-n-not-so-mighty?
Without empathy you just sound like a snob.
If you pulled that stunt to my face, knowing our story, I’d smash the nearest solid item on your microballs.
But then again..
It’s ALL ABOUT YOUR PERFECT WORLD, while being absolutely indifferent about the pain of others.
May your never experience the pain of losing a child.
You don’t know her story, so don’t be an ass.
The way she looks at Bill Belichick made me think first of the female person of the Hot vs Crazy Matrix:
But then, the way she was looking at him made me think of this:
I guess she never tried a paper bag.
I can believe that...I have near 40 yr old female relarive who has nose ring. She has izsues.
I think when people get older what’s on the inside becomes more apparent on the outside. If you are a loving, giving, hopeful person, that will shine through - and is its own kind of beauty. If you are cynical and angry that tends to become more apparent as well.
Same! At almost 60 hubby still pursues me as he did when I was 30. I sure don’t look the same but it’s like I have never lost that appeal to him (thank the Lord!)
It’s nice to have a hubby like that. Pick a good one and keep him. LOL!
It’s called “hitting the wall”
Thats Z not X
I only read the article, didnt even look at the picture. She has some real mental health problems.
I thought they became cougars.
I assume your photo is a digital file (like a JPG or PNG) saved on your computer or your phone.
First thing is you can't post a photo on FreeRepublic unless it's already on an internet website somewhere, e.g. Facebook, Instagram, a picture service like Photobucket, etc. So if the photo file is only on your personal device, you have to post it to somewhere on the internet.
Once you've done that, obtain the URL (the internet address) of the posted file, which is usually something like:
https://some_website.com/image_folder/pic_of_your_face.jpgThen you can post it on FR with HTML in your comment, like this:
<img src="https://some_website.com/image_folder/pic_of_your_face.jpg" width=50%>If you want to adjust the size it displays as, you can change the "width" setting to a different percentage, or a number of pixels (e.g. 500).
No worries. I had hope for my generation lady too. It happens.
