OZARK, Ala. (WPEC) — An Alabama police officer discovered a Florida man hauling 81 gallons of moonshine during a routine traffic stop, an amount authorities say far exceeds what can legally be transported without a license.

The Ozark Police Department said Officer Dylan Griffin with the Crime Suppression Unit pulled over 61-year-old Learndis Hamilton on January 9 for a traffic violation. Containers of clear liquid were reportedly visible inside the vehicle, prompting further investigation.

Tests confirmed the liquid was illegally distilled moonshine, police said. Hamilton, who was traveling from Florida to an unknown destination, was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was arrested at the scene.

Pricing Moonshine

So, how much is a gallon of moonshine worth? It’s difficult to give an exact answer, as prices vary depending on the factors mentioned above. However, here are some rough estimates:

Low-quality moonshine (80-100 proof): $20-$50 per gallon

Mid-quality moonshine (100-120 proof): $30-$70 per gallon

High-quality moonshine (120-140 proof): $50-$100 per gallon

Premium moonshine (140-160 proof): $100-$200 per gallon

Keep in mind that these prices are purely speculative, and the actual cost of moonshine can vary greatly depending on your location and the supplier.

Moonshine is called “moonshine” because it was traditionally made at night, under the light of the moon, to avoid detection by authorities.

The term “moonshine” originated in 18th-century Britain, where the verb “moonshining” referred to any activity carried out at night, often secretly or illicitly, under the cover of moonlight. When the practice of illegal alcohol distillation spread to America, the term was adopted to describe illegally produced whiskey, particularly during periods of heavy taxation or prohibition. Distillers, known as moonshiners, would operate in remote locations and work at night to evade law enforcement and tax collectors, relying on the moon as their only light source.

Historically, the name also reflects the clandestine and rebellious nature of the activity. In the United States, moonshine production became especially prominent after the Excise Whiskey Tax of 1791, which imposed taxes on distilleries and led to widespread illegal distilling. During Prohibition (1920–1933), the practice intensified, and the term “moonshine” became synonymous with secret, high-proof, unaged whiskey made from corn or other grains.

In essence, the name captures both the timing and secrecy of the operation: distillers worked under the moonlight to avoid detection, making “moonshine” a fitting descriptor for this illicit, nocturnal activity. Over time, the term has evolved into a cultural symbol of defiance, ingenuity, and Appalachian tradition, and today it is also used commercially for legal spirits that emulate the traditional style.

A few lines from that classic county song, Rocky Top:

Once two strangers climbed ol’ Rocky Top
Lookin’ for a moonshine still
Strangers ain’t come down from Rocky Top
Reckon they never will

“authorities say far exceeds what can legally be transported without a license.”

Obnoxious law. What is the legal amount? If some can be transported then the law is an ass.
