Austria Hungary lost as its minorities were spilling over into other countries - the Poles were forced to fight in both the A-H and Russian armies and didn’t want to kill each other for foreign masters. Ditto for the Ruthenians, Southern Slavs etc.
It's generally the case that minorities have relatives somewhere else. Britain was lucky that the Scots and Welsh didn't. That luck has run out with the new Muslim arrivals.
