There’s little doubt that the wealthy are closely linked to savvy tax maneuvers. Montana offers famously friendly vehicle registration laws that allow some to avoid paying far more in other states. It’s come under fire plenty of times in the past as have those who leverage the so-called “Montana license plate loophole”.

Now, California says it’s charged 14 individuals tied to more than $20 million worth of vehicles that were were allegedly registered and plated out of state, despite actually spending their lives in California.

Yeah, When I lived there a lady that sold mattresses would sell them to people from Washington state. She had them delivered by truck to the consumer in Washington. That made all of the sales subject to sales taxes in WA. I think she owed over a $1M to the state of WA. She actually started a new store in OR, but followed the law.

And don’t forget the smog test. And the much higher insurance. And God help you if you have to go to the DMV in person. I had to take full day off work when I went for my motorcycle endorsement. 15 minutes of tests and 7 hours of lines.

I left California in 2004. About a year later, I received a check for $440 from California motor vehicle division for a car I no longer owned. Apparently they had lost a lawsuit and had to return the money they charged me when I moved to California in the 90s and had to register my car, which had been purchased in North Carolina and didn’t have some stupid sticker on the engine.

I guess those days are long gone and they’ve resumed charging hostage rates.
